Ohio 151 restricted due to road buckling
JEWETT — The rise in temperatures over last weekend caused the concrete to buckle on a small section of Ohio 151 west of Jewett.
Lauren Borrell, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 11, said a 12-foot section of the roadway near Rumley Road has buckled due to extreme temperatures.
“The concrete buckled in that section of roadway. That was due to the extreme temperatures we experienced last weekend,” she said.
“In this instance it was concrete. The heat got to it and that’s why it popped up like that.”
The roadway is temporarily restricted to one lane while ODOT crews work to repair the section of road. Temporary stop lights have been set up at both ends of the work area, allowing only one-lane of traffic to pass through at a given time.
Borrell said that crews were out pouring concrete on the 12-foot section Thursday.
“They (ODOT crews) are out there today (Thursday) with a concrete truck and they are fixing that section of road. Once the concrete cures, we’ll be able to open it back up to traffic,” she said.
The road should be reopened to traffic by Monday, she said.
Borrell said concrete buckling is not uncommon, however it is not a regular occurrence, either.
“This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen with concrete,” she said. “It’s something that can happen and has happened in the past.”
