Walls of new Dollar General store up in Ferry
MARTINS FERRY — Workers at the site of a Dollar General are quickly constructing the new store and may be done in another month, a worker at the site said Wednesday.
About six weeks ago ground was broken on the new store and now all four walls are up. Workers have been going at what appears to be a fast pace to get the retail site ready for business.
It is located on Broadway Avenue, which is situated above the Kroger shopping area in Martins Ferry. An existing Dollar General is located on Fourth Street in the downtown shopping district, but what will happen at that location remains to be seen.
Construction was one of the types of businesses deemed essential to continue operating by Gov. Mike DeWine in early March, which left the door open for construction work on the store to go ahead even during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, the city is going to be home to another retail site in the next few months. A new Dollar Tree store will be erected on Zane Highway across from City Park.
Workers already have started breaking up old concrete on the land where the Bauer Ford car dealership stood years ago.
It took a little more than two years for that job to get approval from state agencies, as it first had to be determined whether old fuel storage tanks were still underground. After some digging help from the city, it was determined that there were no tanks there.
While both stores offer a variety of merchandise, Dollar General tends to have different price points, and Dollar Trees sell everything for $1 or sometimes less.
