Worker fired over alleged racial slur

BELLAIRE — A village worker’s employment has been terminated for his alleged use of racial slurs on social media.

Bellaire Village Solicitor Michael Shaheen confirmed Friday that the man, who worked in the water department, had been let go from his position. His name was not disclosed.

“He has been terminated,” Shaheen said.

The matter was discussed at length during a closed-door session of Village Council on Thursday night.

Shaheen said previously that, according to the employee handbook, it was up to the solicitor to make a recommendation to council regarding the man’s employment. Shaheen described the man’s posts on social media as “disturbing” noting council, Mayor Vince DiFabrizio and himself all were “sickened” by the man’s comments.

“In my world, and especially in this climate, that’s not something somebody gets a pass on. It’s unacceptable,” Shaheen said following Thursday’s meeting.

The worker’s alleged posts using racial slurs were done outside of regular business hours, but he identified himself as a village employee, Shaheen added.
