Union Local staff member tests positive for COVID-19

MORRISTOWN — A Union Local High School staff member has tested positive for COVID-19.

Superintendent Ben Porter said he got the news Sunday afternoon. He said remote learning will be conducted today, since the school building already had been scheduled to be empty.

“It is a remote learning day for students anyway,” he said. “We’re going to close the building for staff and do some deep cleaning and continue to work out the contact tracing. We’ve started the contact tracing already.”

Porter declined to speculate about whether the staff member might have been infected inside or outside the school.

“Our practices that we’ve had in place, I’m confident in. We’ve been working hard at the social distancing and mask-wearing. Providing hand-sanitizing supplies,” he said. “I don’t see at this time a lot of quarantining required, but we want to work out all the details on that.”

There are around 450 students enrolled at the high school. About 40 have opted for online learning.

This is Union Local’s second case of the coronavirus, following a positive several weeks ago at the middle school.

COVID-19 also has been identified in other area schools. In Belmont County, Shadyside, Martins Ferry and St. CLairsville have had cases, and in Monroe County, the virus has been found among staff or students at Beallsville Elementary/High School and at Monroe Central High School. In West Virginia, cases have occurred at John Marshall and Wheeling Park high schools, as well as in some Ohio County elementaries.

As of Sunday, Belmont County has recorded 806 positive cases among residents since the pandemic arrived. Deputy Health Director Rob Sproul said there were 58 residents isolated at home with active cases on Sunday, as well as six people who were hospitalized. Overall, 717 county residents have recovered, and 25 have died while infected with the virus.
