MORRISTOWN — No in-person classes will be held in the Union Local School District until after the Thanksgiving break after three new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed among students and staff.

Superintendent Ben Porter on Saturday said the district will utilize remote learning through Nov. 24. A holiday break is scheduled from Nov. 25-27. That means students would not return to the school buildings for classes until Nov. 30.

In addition, all extracurricular activities are postponed until Nov. 28.

This replaces a previously announced plan for a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person learning that would have had half of the students attending in-person classes at any one time.

Porter said officials would assess the situation late in the week of Nov. 23 to determine “necessary operating procedure” from that point forward.

The latest coronavirus cases in the district were identified in an elementary student, a middle school teacher and a bus driver. Porter said contact tracing for the elementary student had been completed Saturday, and that individual’s close contacts had been notified and asked to self-quarantine. Contact tracing for the two infected adults is underway.
