Upgrades planned for cemetery in Cadiz in Harrison County

Officers added to police department

CADIZ — The village is planning to install a series of signs at Cadiz Union Cemetery that will help residents more easily locate family members’ gravestones.

Councilman Eric Miller said Signs Limited of Steubenville is creating the signage for $7,934. He said the original estimate was nearly $12,000; however, the village was able to save around $4,000 after comparing prices with the company.

The project will be paid for out of the cemetery funds

Miller said the project includes a new map sign, 35 reflective section signs placed throughout the cemetery, along with poles and two brackets for the main entrance sign.

“There will be a map sign showing lot A, B, C, so if you know where your family is buried, what section, you can go to this map and it will lead you to the section,” he said.

Though the signage has been ordered, Miller said he is unsure if they will be able to install the signs this year due to shipping and potential inclement weather.

Mayor John Migliore said there are currently no section signs at the cemetery. He said it is a wonderful project for the village.

In other news, council approved the hiring of two new police officers during Thursday’s meeting, which brings the Cadiz Police Department back to full staff.

Police Chief Ryan McCann said a recently hired officer has resigned, leaving the department with six officers. He said they are budgeted for eight officers.

McCann said the hiring is a good opportunity for the department as he has had limited inquiries for the positions.

After some discussion, council approved the hiring of Tim Skinner and Courtney Smuck for $16.50 per hour. The two new officers will start Oct. 11 and have a 180-day probationary period.

Councilman Billy Hyde said they need to add a “condition of employment” to all new hire contracts so that the village will be reimbursed for the fire and rescue test, equipment and uniforms purchased by the village if the person does not stay one year. The total cost incurred by the village when hiring a new officer is around $4,000.

Hyde made a motion to add the condition to every new hire’s contract; it was unanimously approved. If the applicant does not stay with the department for at least one year, they will be required to repay the village for their gear, uniform and testing up to $5,000.
