COLERAIN — Multiple departments responded to a structure fire on Sharon Road around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Colerain Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Darrin Sawchuk said that when he received the call for a structure fire, it was reported that the residents of the home were trapped in the house. When he arrived on scene, though, he learned that the residents had been able to escape.

He added that no human deaths occurred, but one of the three dogs that lived in the home had died.

“The only fatality we had there was one dog that didn’t make it outside. They got two of the three dogs out, and we found one dog afterwards, in a back bedroom, was deceased. We had the three occupants of the house. They were evaluated by our squad, but all refused treatment to the hospital,” Sawchuk said.

He added that the cause of the fire remained undetermined Tuesday and said the Ohio State Fire Marshal will investigate its cause and origin.

“There was smoke as soon as we turned down the road. We hit the hydrant and got on scene. There was heavy fire coming from the garage and the right-hand side of the house. After that, crews made entry through the front door. They knocked out what was the ceiling above the living room and the kitchen area and got another hand line for the garage. The right-hand side of the house is pretty much totaled — the living area and bedrooms, bathrooms and stuff like that is a loss, too. There’s smoke and heat damage, but no water or fire damage on the left side of the house,” Sawchuk said.

He added that the right side of the house, attached to the garage, is definitely a total loss, but believes the other side of the house could be salvaged.

Wolfhurst Fire Department, Barton Volunteer Fire Department, Sunset Heights Volunteer Fire Department and Cumberland Trail Fire District’s CARES unit assisted Colerain Volunteer Fire Department with the blaze.

He said that although the Bellaire Red Cross canteen truck was not on the scene, the Red Cross was contacted to help the family find a place to stay for the night.
