Garage fire in Lansing deemed total loss

LANSING — Wolfhurst Volunteer Fire Department, Bridgeport Fire Department, and Brookside Volunteer Fire Department were called to a garage fire at roughly 5 p.m. on Monday evening on Elm Street.

Wolfhurst Volunteer Fire Department chief Matt Otto said that his crew was called due to neighbors seeing fire coming from the resident’s garage.

“When we were notified we had a crew at the station, so they were here within probably three or four minutes and it took them about 20 minutes to get the situation under control,” he said.

Otto added that his crew could see flames and smoke before getting to the fire.

“Luckily, we’re able to keep it away from the house. So the garage is going to be a total loss, but the house was completely untouched,” Otto said.

He added that no residents were injured or killed but the home’s dog died in the fire.

“From what I understand, the homeowner did tell us that there was one pet in the garage that unfortunately didn’t make it. But at this time, we’re just trying to figure out what happened. It’s under investigation, but it will take us a little bit of time for us to figure out what happened,” Otto said.

Although no resident was injured, Otto added that one of Wolfhurst’s firefighters was injured while putting out the fire.

“We do have one firefighter who was injured and is being evaluated at this time. But no bystanders or homeowners were injured,” Otto said. “Nobody was home at the time when it started.”
