CHARLES BALWANZ

Charles E. “Smoke” Balwanz, 72, of Powhatan Point, OH, died Saturday, January 11, 2020, at the VA Medical Center, in Pittsburgh, PA.

He was born September 22, 1947, in Wheeling, WV, son of the late C. Joseph and Betty Ann Tohol Balwanz.

Smoke was a retired truck driver for HLC Trucking in Dilles Bottom; a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 228 and a former post commander, VFW Post 5565, both of Powhatan Point; a graduate of Powhatan High School, Class of 1966; and a board member of the Powhatan Alumni Association. He was a US Army veteran.

Surving are his sister, Joann (Donnie) Dietrich of Powhatan Point, OH; niece, Katie (Mike) Aanerud of Los Osos, CA; nephews, Kriss (Rachel) Dietrich of Powhatan Point, OH, and Wes (Rose) Dietrich of Wheatland, CA; great-nieces and nephews, Wesley, Jakob, Joseph, Jackson, Josh, Derek, Errak, Dietrich and Gunnar. He is also survived by many cousins, including Mike (Janet) Balwanz of Cincinnati, OH.

Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory, 186 Main St., Powhatan Point, OH, on Sunday, from 2 to 8 p.m., where services will be held on Monday, at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Dale Ingold officiating.

Vigil services will be held on Sunday, at 3 p.m., and American Legion services will be held at 7 p.m.

The Powhatan Veterans Honor Guard will conduct services at the funeral home following the funeral service.
