Special concert set at Cadiz church

A SPECIAL fund-raising concert will be held Sunday at the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz.

Scio resident, Abi Hoyt, will be in concert beginning at 2:30 p.m. She will perform a range of songs from Mozart to Sondheim.

The concert will assist Hoyt in funding her studies in opera at Interlochen, the internationally renowned summer arts camp.

Hoyt is one of 30 teen accepted to the prestigious opera program as she strive to develop her vocal studies.

The concert is free, but a donation box will be available at the door for those who wish to assist Hoyt in her dream.

The church is located at 154 West Market St. in Cadiz.

The public is welcome to attend the special event to support Abi. If you would like to donate but are unable to attend, please send your gift to PO Box 21, Scio, OH 43988.

THE SCIO High School Alumni Association will hold its banquet and reunion on May 29 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Scio American Legion.

The alumni association will welcome one of their most noteworthy graduates, Dr. Gordon Bower, an alumnus.

Dr. Bower will address the gathers as an honored class member of the class of 1950.

A scholar and successful athlete, Dr. Bower ultimately became on honored Albert Ray Lang Professor of Psychology at Stanford University in California.

The son of the late Mabel and Clyde Bower of Scio, Dr. Bower also has a brother, Robert, who resides in Scio. Their parents managed a grocery/general store in Scio and his mother was a teacher in the Scio. She was also a tutor in New Philadelphia.

Following the banquet, the alumni association will also award 12 scholarships to area graduating seniors.

The Scio Historical Museum will also be open from 12-5 p.m. that day.

ANOTHER FORMER high school in the county will also be holding its annual alumni banquet on May 29.

Graduates from Franklin High School in New Athens, along with their guests, will gather at the former school which is now known as Franklin Museum for the alumni association’s 78th annual banquet.

Classes to receive special recognition will be those from 1940, 1950, 1960 and 1970.

The meal, which begins at 6 p.m., will be catered by the Franklin Gourmets.

THE ADENA Methodist Church Women on Mission will host a huge trash and treasure sale today from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Ruritan Building in St. Clairsville.

The women promise a “little something for everyone” at reasonable and “unheard of” prices!

THE CUSTER Memorial Association is hosting this year’s Custer Observance Day in cooperation with Rick Williams who will portray George A. Custer and Harold George on Saturday, June 5.

According to Custer Memorial Association members, George, a lecturer, author and a Civil War re-enactor will be the guest speaker. He will explore one of the most celebrated battles in American history – Custer’s Last Stand. George comes well prepared, having a collection of over 100 books on the subject and being a member of the Little Bighorn Association. He has studied the history of the battle for 25 years and has visited the battlefield six times.

The day is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Custer Memorial in New Rumley with music from the Harrison Central High School Band, and flag raising by the Jewett Veterans of Foreign Wars General George Custer Post #3072.

Lunch will be served at the New Rumley United Methodist Church. After lunch, at 1 p.m., Mr. George will give his 45 minute presentation Custer’s Last Stand”The Myth, The Legend, The Truth!”

This will be followed by closing remarks from General Custer, portrayed by Williams.

The Custer Museum Center and Gift Shop will be open during the observance.

The public, and especially area history buffs, are encouraged to attend the event.
