Back to school rally on tap?Wednesday

WITH THE first day of school just around the corner, a back to school rally has been scheduled for students in the Harrison Hills City School District.

The event will be held Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. at Harrison Scio Elementary School in Scio.

Students who will be attending classes in Harrison Hills schools and their families are encouraged to attend the kick-off where food and various activities will be available. In addition, each school age child will receive school supplies.

The event is being coordinated through the school district, the Early Childhood Coordinating Committee which is a subcommittee of the family and Children First Council and several area businesses.

AS PART of district preparations for the first day of school, Harrison Central High School will hold orientation on Aug. 19 for incoming students.

Students in seventh grade are to tour the building from 8-10 a.m., those in eighth grade will be at the school from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., students in grade nine through twelve will be from 1-3 p.m.

Principals Mark Kowalski and Brent Ripley will meet with the students in the auditorium prior to touring the building. At that time, each student will have the opportunity to locate classrooms and lockers. They will also have the chance to meet their teachers.

Parents are also welcome to attend the orientation with the students.

SCREENING will be held Aug. 16 and 17 for children ages 3 and 4 for the Harrison Hills City School District Preschool program.

The screenings will be held at the Harrison County Board of Developmental Disabilities on Cadiz-Jewett Road, Cadiz from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Changes within the preschool program will have students attending either morning or afternoon classes for five days each week.

Classes will be held at Hopedale Elementary from 7:45-10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and at Scio Elementary from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

A SPAGHETTI dinner will be held Sunday, Aug. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hopedale Social hall. Sponsored by the Hopedale Town & Country 4-H Club, the Modern Woodman of American will match donations. Cost if by free-will donation only.

ON FRIDAY, Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m., the New Rumley United Methodist Church will host the annual community picnic and outdoor concert, featuring the Shiloh Mountain Trio.

Everyone is encouraged to attend. Bring along your lawn chair and enjoy an evening of food food, fellowship and entertainment!

THE JP Pyles Memorial Scholarship Foundation is sponsoring its annual fundraiser on Aug. 14

A poker run will begin at Bob’s Pub in Scio with registration at 9 a.m. Cost is $15 per person or $20 per couple. All bikes will be out by 11 a.m. A roast beef dinner for riders is included in the registration fee.

The dinner, compliments of the Scio Volunteer Fire Department and the Scio American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, is also open to the public from 4-7 p.m. at the Legion. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.

A dance will also be held there from 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. Cost to attend the dance only is $5 per person.

A silent auction will be held along with a 50/50 raffle and chances to win a 42-inch flat screen television.

THE NEW Athens Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fair and poker run today.

Things will begin at 11 a.m. when the poker run begins with the first bike leaving the firehall.

The last bike out is scheduled for noon and the last bike in is 6 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded and pay outs will include the best, second best and worst hands. There is a $15 per person registration fee. All riders and passengers will get a barbecue chicken dinner and drink.

Beginning at noon, the chicken barbecue will be available to the public along with other foods such as sandwiches, fries, fish, homemade pies and drinks. Entertainment and games will also be available along with a 50/50 raffle, games and inflatables.

At 7 p.m., the annual parade will begin on the south end of town and will conclude at the Franklin Museum. Trophies will be presented in several categories immediately following the parade.

D.J. Cameo A will spill tunes from 8 p.m-12 a.m.

A cornhole tournament, sponsored by Missy and Mike’s Hometown Carryout, will be held at 9 p.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person, bring your own partner. Payment will be based on the number of entries.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the department and will be used towards the purchase of equipment.

SANDRA J. Leggett, Principal at Harrison East Elementary, formerly Harrison Hopedale, is welcoming all student to the new and exciting school year.

In a letter she writes, “The opening of the 2010-2011 school year brings with it many exciting changes including a new name, Harrison East Elementary. I knowstudents, parents and community membersmay be experiencinganxieties and questions, not to mention curiosities. I want to assure you that everyone is working diligently to make the new experience as smooth andstress-free as possible. The staff of Harrison East Elementary is looking forward to teaming together to create a fun and safe environment along with a successful learning experience for all students. Leggett also noted an open house will be held Aug. 25, 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for everyone including students, parents, grandparents and members of the communities. We hope you will take this opportunity to stop by to visit the building and meet the friendly staff of Harrison East Elementary.
