IF YOU recently noticed a rather large flock of Cardinals migrating to the Cadiz Country Club you do not need to be in fear.

The gathering was mostly golfers who were graduates of Cadiz High School who were participating in the 10th annual Robert Kidder alumni golf outing.

According to outing Chairman Steve Keesey, 88 golfers gathered to reminisce of school days gone by, a round of golf and a steak dinner prepared and served by the Country Club staff.

This year $2,500 was raised due to the generosity of 55 sponsors.

Top sponsors include SJJ Associates Inc., Rosebud Mining, Oxford Mining and John Tabacchi. Scholarships will be given to students graduating from the class of 2011 in behalf of the outing.

Keesey announced first place was awarded to Todd Dunlap, Paul Poillucci, Owen Beetham and Derek Madzia. Second place was awarded to Dwight Cunningham, Jim Rocchi, Denny Barrett and George Postalakis. Third place went to Donnie Bethel, Doug Spiker, Kevin Hyde and Steve Miser.

Keesey extended his thanks to the committee members, volunteers, the sponsors, participants and staff members at the country club for making this a success.

The event was held in conjunction with the Cadiz Alumni Association annual banquet which was held at the Hopedale Social Hall this past Saturday.

Members from across the country were on hand for the annual banquet to reminisce and create new memories.

Organizers said plans are already underway for next year’s bash!

A Harvest Silent Auction and 26th Annual Effie Stewart Chicken Barbecue will be held Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Jewett United Methodist Church from 4-7 p.m.

The popular event features a half chicken, potato and dessert along with beverages. Adults can eat for $8 while children dinners are $4 each.

Folks may eat in or carry out their meals.

The auction will feature a Dell mini laptop computer, fishing items, a quilt and much more.

All proceeds will benefit the Jewett Community Park, the museum and the volunteer fire department.

A blood drive is also planned in conjunction with the event.

Those wishing to participate in the Red Cross sponsored life-giving drive which will be held Aug. 26 from 1-7 p.m. at the church, should contact the church at 740-946-5591.

The men’s team leader, Brian Juroski, has issued a blood drive challenge to the women’s team to determine which group brings in the most donors and units of blood. Pastor Hester Hudson, women’s team leader, encouraging all area residents to donate to the drive.

THE TAPPAN Lake Volunteer Fire Department will host its 8th Annual Hog Roast on Aug. 28 from 4-7 p.m.

The menu will feature pulled pork sandwiches, salads, baked beans, potato salad, desserts and beverages. Tickets for those 10 years of age and older at $10 while children ages 4-11 can dine for $5. Children three and under are admitted at no charge.

A 50/50 raffle drawing will be held at 7 p.m. and the winner does not need to be present.

ALTHOUGH THE temperatures still remain in the mid-80s, county residents will soon be noticing shorter days and cooler nights.

Just in time for the approaching fall season, the Harrison County Military Support Group is holding a raffle for a quilt which will fit a full or queen size bed.

According to members of the group, the drawing will be held on Oct. 19 at the Halloween/Thanksgiving Packing for packages to be sent to area service members who are serving over seas. The packing will be held at the Cadiz Fire House at 6 p.m.

Tickets for the drawing are $1 each or six for $5 and may be obtained by contacting any support group member or by calling Sue or Terry Stewart at 740-942-3642.

THE HOPEDALE Town & Country 4-H Club will sponsor a spaghetti dinner on Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Hopedale Social Hall.

The club uses the dinner as a fundraising event. Cost of the meal is by donation only, but the money collected is matched by the Modern Woodsmen of America.

So get out and support your local 4-H members tomorrow and enjoy a good home-cooked meal!
