Oktoberfest on tap next weekend

THE CADIZ Oktoberfest 2010 is coming to Sally Buffalo Park on Oct. 2-3 with something for young and old alike.

Sponsored by the Cadiz Business Association, the event will run Saturday until 8 p.m. and Sunday until 4 p.m. and offer a variety of food and craft vendors, games, entertainment and a beer garden. Activities take place in and around Wallace Lodge, with many of the vendors inside the building. CBA member Jackie Hutyera is in charge of vendors this year.

Activities start Saturday with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Cadiz Lions Club from 7-11 a.m., followed by a Classic Car Show at noon to 5 p.m. and inflatable rides from 1-6 p.m. Teams can register at 1 p.m. for a cornhole tournament at 2 p.m., while DJ Leroy Bowman will play from noon to 4 p.m. Participants can also take the stage for a karaoke contest from 2-5 p.m.

The cornhole tournament will also be held on Sunday along with inflatable rides from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Lions Club breakfast returns Sunday from 7-11 a.m., followed by the Third Annual Lucas D. Sedgmer Memorial 5K Run/Walk. Registration for the race will begin at 10 a.m. DJ Jeremy Thompson will spin tunes for the race from noon to 4 p.m. Registration for the race begins at 10 a.m. and the event starts with a 100-yard Kids’ Dash at 12:30 p.m. and the run/walk at 1 p.m. Proceeds from the race benefit the Lucas D. Sedgmer Memorial Scholarship Fund. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers, both walkers and runners, in various age groups. All kids will receive certificates and a goodie bag.

“We have food vendors both days, a craft show and flea market,” said Chairman Ryan Coffman. “We try to include (the 5K) to have something for everyone.”

About 30 food and craft vendors are expected, with the Flushing Masonic Lodge providing a rib and fish stand and Cadiz Councilman Kevin Best cooking up barbecued chicken. Meanwhile, Bob Huffman of DiAngelo’s Pizza and Sports Bar will provide beer. Baked goods will also be on hand to satisfy the sweet tooth.

THE FIRST annual Harrison County Benefit Motorcycle Run will be held Oct. 10 beginning with sign-up at 11 a.m. at the Hopedale American Legion. Cost is $10 per person and the ride begins at noon with the last bike in scheduled at 4 p.m. at the John Stephenson Memorial Gymnasium at Harrison Central High School.

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and last place participants with three different routes to choose from. Riders will roll dice at each stop according to organizers.

Dinner will be prepared by Eugene Hilligas and is being provided courtesy of Harcatus PAC Advisory Committee.

The event is sponsored by the American Legion Riders and will benefit the Harcatus Tri-County Food Pantry in Harrison County.

In addition, a dinner/auction will be held at the Stephenson Center at 4 p.m. on Oct. 9 to benefit the food pantry.

Doors are scheduled to open at 3 p.m.

Organizers will also sponsor a 50/50 raffle along with live and silent auctions that evening.

A CORNHOLE Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Adena Community Center.

Beer and food will be available.

Admission is $10 per person and the event will be held rain or shine.

The Jewett Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3072 will be honoring fallen Veterans this Veterans Day. Post 3072 will be placing crosses in Ruritan Park in Jewett, one for each Veteran in the local Cemeteries surrounding Jewett.

Erecting crosses at the Ruritan Park will allow the public to see the number of past local citizens that have served their country from the Revolutionary War until Present.

A total of 575 Crosses are expected to be placed in the Park. The size of the park and the number of crosses are limited, but the names of any local veteran buried elsewhere or cremated will be posted for all visitors to see.

V.F.W Post 3072 would like to thank the Veterans families, citizens of Jewett, Jewett town council, Jewett Ruritans, and the Jewett Sportsman’s Club. Post 3072 had borrowed the crosses from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 532 from Newcomerstown and was preparing to return them when donations began pouring in, allowing the Post to purchase them. Post 3072 plans on erecting the crosses every year for Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances.
