Saturday again marks D-Day observance

SATURDAY marks the anniversary of D-Day. It was on June 6, 1944, when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in what has been called the largest invasion force ever assembled. The battle for the liberation of Europe from Nazi tyranny began. I recall the day very clearly. Everyone in Boydsville had their radios turned on full blast and since it was summer and no one had air conditioning, the windows were wide open. Some Belmont County boys were in that invasion force and one from St. Clairsville was in the first wave. A Bridgeport soldier lost his life when the troops hit the beaches.

The invasion marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. It was 11 months later when Germany unconditionally surrendered.

May we always remember those who participated in that invasion and in all our battles of World War II

Let us forever be grateful for their many sacrifices and pray for those who lost their lives. As one US Congressman said, “we must never forget the bravery and sacrifices of our veterans. They are truly America’s heroes.”

THE ATLANTIC Hurricane Season begins on Monday, June 1 and ends on Nov. 30.

No one knows what Mother Nature has in store for us, The only thing we can do is be prepared. In reports on the hurricane season, it states “It is important to be prepared for hurricanes and tropical storms every year, regardless of seasonal forecasts.”

In recent years our Ohio Valley has been hit several times with remnants of some hurricanes. Let us pray and hope that mother nature will be kind and we will be spared of destructive winds and rains.

According to an initial forecast issued recently by Colorado State University, the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season may be one of the least active in decades. The early outlook released in April calls for seven named storms, including three hurricanes, one of which is predicted to attain major hurricane status. According to the information, this is well below the 30-year average of 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes
