SCHOOL BELLS will be ringing in the very near future for Eastern Ohio students, some as early as this week. The resumption of classes signals the end of the summer season.

That being the case, an ideal family oriented way to wind down the season unfolds in Martins Ferry this week. The annual Betty Zane Days Festival officially begins Tuesday night and with it comes a wide variety of activities and entertainment for individuals of all ages.

The annual event is under the direction of the Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department. The VFD plans meticulously for the festival, looking to provide all types of attractions.

One of the annual highlights is the men’s basketball tournament which attracts some of the finest hoopsters in the Ohio Valley. The tourney draws large and passionate crowds.

It was also an event which was nearly a no go as an entry fee dispute weeks ago placed the tourney perilously close to being non-existent this year. But cooler heads prevailed, as an agreement was reached, preserving the tourney to the joy of all.

In addition to great food, lively entertainment and a plethora of rides, the festival will feature its annual 5K race Wednesday. The race takes on added significance this year as it is being dedicated to Patricia Graham, The Times Leader Lifestyles editor who died last month.

Patricia was a race enthusiast, who championed the cause of local races. We at The Times Leader are paying tribute to Patricia by donning green t-shirts for the race. We hope the public displays an outpouring of support for Patricia’s memory and takes part in the event. And if so, wear green.

The festival runs through Saturday, with many organizations benefitting.

We commend the Martins Ferry VFD for staging a first-class festival and we urge local residents to support a worthwhile event.
