Election Begins

LET THE voting begin. While Election Day is officially set for Nov. 2, voting actually got under way in Ohio Tuesday.

Early voting is becoming a more popular practice with each new election. Voters began casting ballots Tuesday in varying numbers throughout the Buckeye State. We expect Eastern Ohio voters to make use of the procedure in increasing numbers, as it is a smart, efficient and convenient way to make your voice heard.

Many local issues are on the November ballot. Some school districts are seeking crucial levies to assist with their continuing budget battles.

St. Clairsville, meanwhile, is seeking voter approval for its first-ever city income tax while many villages, townships and park entities all across Eastern Ohio are pushing levies.

Some counties will be selecting commissioners, empowering them to help govern their respective county.

Many key state and federal races will be decided.

At the forefront is the gubernatorial contest between Democratic incumbent Ted Strickland and GOP challenger John Kasich. The race is beginning to get quite close, again placing an emphasis on every single vote.

The Ohio electorate will also choose an attorney general, auditor and treasurer. Moreover, Congressional seats — both state and federal — will be up for grabs as well as numerous judgeships.

Despite the absence of a presidential race on Nov. 2, this election carries much impact and subsequent consequences.

Early voting without a reason came into existence some five years ago in Ohio, bidding to energize the electorate. It has been successful as more and more voters have opted to go that route.

We encourage all voters to take part in the upcoming election, be it early or at the polls on Nov. 2. In these turbulent times, each registered voter needs to stand up and be counted.
