Season to Embrace

THE FINAL chapter has been written on the feel-good story of the local high school football season. And although we would have scripted the 15th and final chapter to have a different ending, the fairy tale season of the Shadyside Tigers is a best seller.

The Tigers captured the hearts and support of Ohio Valley grid fans as they staged a remarkable, and to some an unexpected, run at the elusive state championship.

Fresh off the heels of an OVAC championship 9-1 regular season, Coach Mark Holenka charges proved they were far from being satisfied. The Tigers, led by a character-rich group of 14 seniors, began their post-season quest with a home field triumph over Trimble.

That was followed by trip to Steubenville and a dismantling of Malvern at Harding Stadium. The Orange & Black’s silencing of the Hornets resulted in a regional final berth against 12-0 Bridgeport, the lone regular-season vanquisher of Shadyside.

The rematch at St. Clairsville proved no contest as the Tigers pocketed an eyed-opening 28-0 triumph and a spot in the Division VI Final Four.

Next up was another unbeaten, 13-0 Mogadore. No problem. The well-drilled Shadeans rolled to yet another easy triumph, gaining entry into the promised land — the state finals.

Shadyside is no stranger to the state title tilt, facing Marion Local in the 2006 championship contest, won by the Flyers, 17-0.

Friday’s championship game proved even more unkind, as the Tigers suffered a lopsided loss to juggernaut Delphos St. John.

The Week 15 outcome is not the one we were hoping for, but nonetheless does nothing to diminish the admiration and pride we have for a most special season, authored by a most special group of players and coaches.

We salute the great achievements attained by the Shadyside Tigers this season and thank them for all the joy they showered on the Ohio Valley.
