911 Tribute

SEPTEMBER 11, 2001. That date is etched permanently and painfully into American archives, when terrorists waged deadly attacks on American soil.

The World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. were targets of al-Qaeda-piloted planes. Nearly 3,000 people and 19 hijackers died that fateful day.

As we approach the 10th anniversary of that national tragedy, a local-based committee is laying the groundwork for a special ceremony to commemorate a most-sobering event. Martins Ferry Mayor Phil Wallace is spearheading a panel for the Ohio Valley 911 Memorial program.

It will be held Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. inside Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena.

We commend the committee for championing such a worthwhile and heartfelt cause. Although that dreadful day is nearly 10 years past, it is one recounted often.

Much like Pearl Harbor, 911 is one of those times in life when you can easily recall what you were doing when your heard the news of the planes striking the Twin Towers.

It is an occasion that should never pass without proper tribute. Being the 10th anniversary adds increased significance.

Mayor Wallace is joined in this celebration planning by Jim Nichelson, Marian Martin and Pat Duffy.

They are hoping to draw more than 5,000 people to WesBanco to be part of the special proceedings, which Wallace says has been eight years in the planning.

An affair of such magnitude does not come without costs.

We encourage businesses and individuals to support a most worthy cause. Another planning session is set for Wednesday, April 6 at 4 p.m. in the Martins Ferry municipal building.
