Out of Luck

THE DUST has settled in Morgantown. New Martinsville native Bill Stewart finds himself buried under that dirt, now out of a job he cherished.

Stewart has done an admirable job as Rich Rodriguez’s replacement in the role of head football coach at West Virginia University. He didn’t do well enough, however, for new Athletic Director Oliver Luck.

The former Mountaineer quarterback opted to hire a head-coach-in-waiting, tapping Dana Holgorsen to be offensive coordinator this fall and head coach in 2012.

Luck’s brainstorm has imploded. It was doomed to fail from the start.

Stewart handled the lame-duck status poorly, consequently he is gone.

Holgorsen, meanwhile, takes over the head post on very shaky ground after several reports of public drunkenness and rowdy behavior.

Stewart reached an agreement to leave after it was revealed he asked media members to “find some dirt” on Holgorsen. Not a wise move and one we are surprised Stewart would engineer. He always appeared as class act on and off the Morgantown sidelines.

His exodus in the wake of such disturbing action was necessary.

We believe that Holgorsen may also be deserving of such a quick fate.

His social behavior has been totally unacceptable. Holgorsen’s unruliness has been a black eye to Luck, the WVU athletic department and the university.

One incident may be overlooked, but repeated offenses of similar nature raise the red flag. Is that the type of role model the Mountaineer nation is looking to lead its football program?

How can Holgorsen discipline his players when he cannot discipline himself?

Holgorsen has a collegiate track record of being an offensive guru. Unfortunately, his recent off-field actions have proved even more offensive.

Luck, for right now, is supporting Holgorsen. It may be a decision he regrets.
