St. C. Power

IT’S WORTH considering. That is how we feel about the possibility of St. Clairsville entering into an agreement with a soon-to-be completed power plant in Fremont.

The natural gas facility offers a chance for operating savings and enhanced efficiency. So we believe it is in St. Clairsville’s best interests to do its homework on such an agreement.

Council members and city officials discussed the venture at Monday’s meeting. Such a deal does peak the interest of city officials, as it dangles the possibility of substantial savings in energy costs.

And with St. Clairsville in the midst of a tough financial cycle, the power proposal is even more attractive.

The one downside is that time is of the essence.

St. Clairsville officials are operating under a tight deadline. A June 15 deadline has been established for communities to sign on. One hundred communities have been extended the offer with many already on board.

Thus, St. C. officials have little time to do their respective homework and decide if they join, at what level of participation.

Further clouding the picture is that the amount of savings St. C. will realize cannot be guaranteed. That is a big piece of the puzzle.

The power agreement affords St. Clairsville an opportunity to receive a substantial windfall from energy savings.

We trust, however, the Hilltop community will not haphazardly leap into the deal without looking at all the possible pros and cons of the move, albeit in quick fashion.

One of the hallmarks of St. Clairsville municipal government has been sound-decision making. We believe that St. C. officials will again make a wise choice.
