Peaceful Progress

THREE WEEKS can make a world of difference in the political arena.

Bridgeport Village Council is a prime example.

At a special meeting earlier this month, Police Chief Andy Klotz was needed to intervene between two village officials. Tempers were flaring and decorum had left the chambers.

The meeting ended in turmoil. One of the main issues was left on the table — the rehiring of Michael Shaheen as solicitor. Council held its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night. A much calmer and professional setting played out.

As a result, positive results were realized.

Pay raises for village employees has been a long-debated issue. Council members approved the salary increases Tuesday night.

Moreover, the village solicitor’s position which sparked the heated session earlier this month was also put to bed. Shaheen was re-employed with a salary increase, but, at his request, not as large as originally sought. He requested the $1,300 difference be applied to the village employees’ increases.

Much to their credit, village officials got a great deal accomplished Tuesday night in a civil fashion. Everyone may not have been on the same page, but progress was realized and done with no outbursts.

Hopefully, this becomes the norm inside Bridgeport Council Chambers rather than the exception. Many good things can occur when everyone is pulling in the same direction.
