Support VFD Fest

CLASSES HAVE resumed in some Ohio Valley schools. Others will start up next week. Summer is definitely winding down, and night is descending upon us earlier and earlier.

That, however, doesn’t mean the end of local festivals.

The Betty Zane Days concluded another successful run in Martins Ferry earlier this month. It has become a recreational rite in August.

A new kid has now surfaced on the local festival front. The inaugural Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department Festival opens in the All-American Town Thursday and will continue through Saturday night

The event promises to be a quality affair in its maiden voyage.

The opening ceremony itself — set for Thursday at 6 p.m. — should prove a banner event. U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson will be the keynote speaker. Anytime you can attract a national politician to your town, it is a feather in your cap.

The Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department Festival will feature a wide variety of entertainment. Several musical acts, carnival rides, professional wrestling and endless amounts of food will be offered. In addition, a hot-dog eating contest will take place Saturday.

The Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department came to the rescue of a village in dire need of a fire department. It has proven a dependable and efficient unit.

The VFD has supported the village passionately. We urge the public to support the festival.
