50 years of Sonny Boy

What does it take to stay in business for 50 years? The list is long, and it includes determination, perseverance, optimism, patience, dedication and a commitment to meeting customers’ wants and needs.

Joe and Sherry Banco know exactly what it takes. On Sunday, they marked the 50th anniversary of their business – Sonny Boy Restaurant, located on National Road in Brookside. The St. John Central High School graduates had been married for just two years when they started the venture, opening the eateries doors on Nov. 1, 1965.

Joe Banco started working in the food service industry when he was just 12 years old. He washed dishes and did preparation work for a family business. He said interacting with customers and talking with the people who visit Sonny Boy is his favorite part of the job today.

That makes him a good match for his wife and business partner, who loves to cook. Together, they have all the bases of customer service, business management and providing tasty food covered.

The Bancos’ enterprise has grown and changed over the years. When they purchased the shop as a young married couple, it featured just nine stools and eight booths for guests. In fact, the folks who owned it at the time were planning to close it down for good.

Since they opened their doors, the Bancos have expanded the dining room, adding several more booths. They also added a separate room for smokers in an effort to make all their guests as comfortable as possible. The establishment’s staff has grown as well, providing jobs for several local residents.

One thing that has changed very little over the past five decades is the restaurant’s menu. The Bancos are devoted to offering fresh food, with everything made from scratch. In fact, some of the dishes on the menu feature old family recipes that have been handed down through generations.

The most popular meal of the day at Sonny Boy involves breakfast fare. The couple said many people stop in to enjoy steak and eggs, home fries, sausage, ham and bacon. And some of those customers represent multiple generations of the same families who have been patronizing the restaurant for decades.

Congratulations to Sherry and Joe Banco and to Sonny Boy Restaurant. We wish them many more years of success in their Belmont County location.
