Try as they might, Ohio officials have not yet been able to convince all those who are eligible to get their COVID-19 vaccines.

Ohioans of all ages and from all walks of life continue to go about their daily routines with the protection the shots can provide to them and others. But Gov. Mike DeWine was able to offer another reason to those working in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, as he announced a change in the guidelines for those employees.

Those who are fully vaccinated no longer need to undergo twice-weekly testing for the virus.

It is another move that brings Ohio in line with federal guidelines, but it may also prompt some who have been holding out to get over their hesitation and get vaccinated.

A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second of the Moderna or Pfizer doses or the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

The change is consistent with federal guidelines, DeWine said.

It makes no sense that those working in facilities housing the most vulnerable would be unwilling to do what they need to do to protect themselves, their families and the people for whom they are employed to care.

But there are still far too many who, whether it be out of fear, stubbornness or buying in to entirely false social media conspiracy theories, are still unvaccinated.

Maybe this chance in guidelines will prompt more of them to do the right thing. Here’s hoping.
