New park in the works

Ohio has just broken ground on its 76th state park.

That is wonderful news for adventurers, history buffs and nature lovers — but this one is important for another reason. Great Council State Park, near Xenia, will help the Buckeye State begin to tell its whole story.

At one time the area was home to one of the largest-known Shawnee settlements in what became Ohio. More than 1,000 people lived there.

“This is an exciting step toward preserving an important piece of Ohio’s history,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “This project gives us the unique opportunity to connect future generations with the past, while protecting the legacy of the Shawnee and inviting them to share their story.”

There are three federally recognized Shawnee tribes working with Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials to get this right. Great Council will include an interpretive center that will have displays that allow present-day members of the Shawnee tribes to talk about their legacy and tell their stories.

What a wonderful addition to Ohio’s collection of state parks and historical locations.

“This new center will be an educational tool that can take visitors into the past and inspire an appreciation for another time,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “We hope to see families, school groups, scouts, and all people use this space to learn more about the tribes who used to call this part of Ohio home.”

Indeed, once this one is open next year, do not miss the opportunity.
