Spelling Bee Thanks Offered

Dear Editor,

On behalf of A.J. Feiock, an eighth grade student at Union Local Middle School, I want to sincerely thank the sponsors of the Belmont County Spelling Bee for providing him with the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Those sponsors were: The Times Leader, Riesbeck’s Food Markets, The Citizen’s Bank, AAA Ohio Auto Club, Airport Limousine Service, Inc., the Ohio Lottery and the East Central Education Service Center.

Approximately 225 students were involved in local spelling bees in Belmont County this year, which would not have been possible without the support of the above sponsors. Participating in a spelling bee is not only fun but can improve a child’s spelling skills, increase their vocabularies, help them learn the etymology of English words, improve their self-confidence and teach them how to present themselves in front of an audience.

Two students from each school district advance to the County Bee, and from there only one student from Belmont County wins the opportunity to represent us at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. What a wonderful opportunity for that student and a goal for which all the students should strive!

Once again, thank you to all of the sponsors who continue to recognize the important of providing additional educational opportunities for our Belmont County students.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Sonk, Teacher

Union Local School District
