Dear Editor,

With a more frequent and caustic tone, many letters to the editor go unchecked or without challenge.

While opinions should be encouraged, their validity needs to be considered as well. One may be entitled to their own opinion, but they are not entitled to their own facts or creation thereof.

One recent letter implied the Democrat Party is evil and one of perversion. While some may read these writings and be amused, others do not.

From President Obama signing the Lilly Ledbetter Act (equal pay for equal work for women) to Governor Strickland playing a critical role in saving a local plant and jobs, some fail to recognize or understand the connection locally.

The same can be said for Ohio Attorney General Richard Corday’s successful case against AIG recovering some 2.7 billion dollars for investors and retirees, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s constant fight for working families and workplace safety, U.S. Representative Charlie Wilson’s courageous vote to prevent insurance companies from denying health care or dropping at risk policy holders, U.S. Representative Zack Space addressing our dependency on foreign oil which in part supports funding military action against our troops abroad. State Senator Jason Wilsons fight against predatory lending is another example of work our candidates stand for.

More recently without fanfare or self promotion the Belmont County Democrat Party donated all proceeds from our picnic to two well deserving service organizations along with conducting a food drive for a local food pantry. Once again this is just a sampling of the work we do.

At a recent home party where thirty activists gathered representing seniors, faith, labor, youth and veterans all agreed the stark contrast from days gone by to today’s politics.

Hopefully time, patience and perseverance along with factual debate will prevail.
