Battling Cancer

Dear Editor:

During October the American Cancer Society receives more calls about breast cancer than any other type of cancer. That’s because October is breast cancer awareness month. Many of the calls are from women who want to learn how they can help in the fight against this disease.

Throughout the month people are more likely to read and hear about this disease in the media, or see special promotions on select products. The pink ribbon symbol represents breast cancer awareness. You will see this ribbon displayed at nearby stores, in ads on television and pinned on the outfits of hundreds of women.

All breast cancer survivors have a story to tell. They can recall the day they were diagnosed and without hesitation can give details about their treatment. Today, thousands of women across the country have survived breast cancer. And one thing is certain – each one is thankful every morning when she rises that she has another day to celebrate.

The American Cancer Society works every day so these women not only have more days ahead of them to enjoy, but more years and birthdays to celebrate. One way that we honor these survivors and celebrate the month is through our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk that is held annually in Canton.

This 3.1 mile noncompetitive walk not only gives our survivors a chance to come together, but also gives the community a chance to show they care about raising funds and awareness to eliminate this disease.

On Oct. 24, please join more than 5,000 people from the area at Canton McKinley High School. Together we can raise funds and awareness so we can continue to make strides against breast cancer. Registration at The Repository registration area is at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m.

Your support will not only help us save lives, but will give women everywhere a chance to light another candle on their next birthday.
