The benefits package is a great thing, but there are still teachers who have to pay out-of-pocket for classroom supplies, etc. They deserve the package in my opinion. They spent the time in college earning their bachelor's and master's degrees. As far as private sector jobs are concerned, an old adage from when my husband was in the Navy comes to mind: "Choose your rate, choose your fate!" - translated as 'choose your job, choose your future.' Don't gripe about the wonderful benefits these teachers receive because, in my opinion, they are well deserved. They worked for what they wanted in a career and spent years cultivating young minds, caring for others' children when their own parents didn't care at all, participated in the community to make a difference...yeah, they deserve every benefit they receive...

Aren't you forgetting the medical..starting salry..27,000 plus great PERS plus exempt for SSI which means we pay into theirs with tax payer dollars and they do NOT pay into ours. So the reality of that 27,000 salary is really about 45,000 with the benefit package. Let's also not forget the key word there. starting salary. How many new teachers do we have in Bellaire School.Even the super is drawing pension and still drawing a salary. Most jobs in the private sector have a starting salary of half about 9.00 an hour and zero benefits or retirement.

Very well said, Chad!! Nice to know that there are still people back home who genuinely care about the community, its people AND the school district. I haven't lived back home for quite a few years (19 and counting), but I still care about the town and I still have good friends with kids in the district. I realize I don't have a say in the matter, but I want the best for the schools and teachers who enstilled great values and morals in not only me but also my fellow classmates. Good luck, Big Reds!! ~Erinn Sullivan-Resseguie Class of 1994
