MARTINS FERRY - On Oct. 8, Comcast announced the launch of its Xfinity Home service in the Martins Ferry and surrounding service areas.

Xfinity Home is a monitored home security and automation system that offers its customers a wealth of choices and customization options to further bring their living space into the digital age.

It offers traditional home security features such as: police and fire alarm protection, watch secure live streaming video from wireless cameras, including night-vision cameras, while away from the home and much more.

It also gives the homeowner the ability to turn lights on and off and adjust thermostat settings remotely.

Many of these features may be controlled utilizing a mobile feature inside the home as well.

"There is also a touchpad that can control the entire system," Bob Grove with Comcast explained.

"The system is completely customizable."

The system also comes with the Xfinity Home app, available both on the Apple and Android platforms.

"Xfinity Home brings digital home monitoring to a new level," said Mitch Bowling, Senior Vice President and General Manager of New Businesses for Comcast through a press release.

"It comes with a range of broadband-based technologies that empower customers to stay better connected to their home virtually anytime."

This is the first major line of business added to the Comcast lineup in a while, joining the company's cable television, digital phone and high-speed internet service offerings.

While cable is Comcast's featured product, Grove stated a customer seeking Xfinity Home only needs to be a high-speed internet customer in order participate.

The entire system operates wirelessly, with the information being transmitted back and forth via an encrypted signal.

But just how customizable is it?

"If the customer wishes, they can set a feature to be sent an email or text when a door opens or closes," Grove said. "It can also be set up to alert you if a door doesn't open.

"Say a customers' child is supposed to return home from school between 3-4 p.m. The system monitors the door and if it hasn't been opened by a pre-established set time, the system alerts the user."

In addition to these features, Xfinity Home offers customers the ability to:

Grove also stated that customers utilizing Xfinity Home may be eligible for up toa 20 percent discount on their homeowners' insurance.

The service was first unveiled in Houston in mid-2010 and has been spreading throughout the country ever since.
