Fire destroys Blaine home

BLAINE - A bright, sunny Sunday afternoon soon turned tragic for a Blaine family when flames destroyed their home.

Firefighters from three different volunteer stations converged on the house at 68115 Handel St.

The fire was reported at approximately 3:45 p.m., according to Wolfhurst Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Otto.

Volunteer firefighters from Bridgeport, Brookside and Wolfhurst responded to a fire in Blaine Sunday afternoon. No one was injured in the blaze, which destroyed a home at 68115 Handel St.

"It was pretty much involved when we got here," Otto reported.

Assisting Wolfhurst were units from Bridgeport and Brookside.

Firefighters were seen tossing charred remains of furniture out windows as smoke continued to billow from the roof.

According to Otto, the family was home at the time of the blaze, but everyone was able to escape unharmed.

One woman, presumably the resident, tried to return to the structure, but was quickly denied by firefighters.

The bottom portion of Blaine-Chermont Road was closed to allow emergency vehicles access to fire hydrants.

No cause had been determined when The Times Leader went to press today. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

According to a spokesperson, the house was in the process of being torn down when a fire ignited. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximaely three hours.

Units from Wolfhurst, Brookside, Colerain and Sunset Heights responded to the fire. The Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department provided a water tanker.

The department was called Saturday at 8:09 a.m. to 452 N. Huron St., and answering the call were Engines 5 and 2, Ladder 1 and Rescue 1.

According to the spokesman, the scene was cleared at 12:17 p.m. No other details were available at press time.
