Rosecrans girls sweep Shadyside

Defenses dominated Thursday night at Zanesville where Shadyside's Lady Tigers came out on the short end of a 42-37 count against Bishop Rosecrans in girls' high school basketball action.

The loss left Tina Yates' LT's at 8-7 heading into a Saturday afternoon (1:00) home court tipoff against Martins Ferry.

Rosecrans, which completed a regular-season sweep of Shadyside, improved to 11-2. The Bishops were 52-49 overtime victors earlier in Tiger Town.

Shadyside trailed 10-9 after one panel before taking a 19-18 lead to the lockerroom at halftime. Rosecrans came back to forge a 31-28 upperhand after three panels.

Lady Bishops' inside ace Molly Nash connected for a game-leading 25 points. Nash also collected six of the winners' 24 rebounds.

Karli Bonar netted a team-leading 19 points for the Orange. Backcourt mate Hayley Holenka hooped 12 markers. Kristen Fijalkowski nabbed six of Shadyside's 19 rebounds.

Turnovers plagued the LT's who were charted for 15 giveaways compared to eight charged to Rosecrans.

Indian Creek 50, Martins Ferry 37

At Martins Ferry, invading Indian Creek used a 16-6 third-quarter uprising to overtake the Lady Riders who dropped to 10-5 with the loss. The same two teams meet again Monday night at Wintersville.

Creek was a 8-4 leader after one panel and maintained an 18-16 command at halftime. The Purple Riders faced a 34-22 deficit after three quarters. Martins Ferry staged a fourth quarter rally but eventually came up short.

Kierra Kamarec (11) and Bre Berryman (10) topped Creek with guard Brooke Mains contributing a nine-point outing.

Ferry's Jess Kinney tallied a game-leading 16 counters. Kylie Stalder supported with nine markers. Morgan Stalder collected 13 rebounds.

The Lady Riders travel to Shadyside for a Saturday afternoon varsity-only tipoff.

Harrison Central 63, Edison 52

At Cadiz, Harrison sophomore Katie Ellzy scored 19 points, nabbed a career-high 22 rebounds and recorded seven blocked shots as the Lady Huskies improved to 8-9 by upending Edison.

The hosts edged ahead 12-9 after one period before Edison came back to gain a 22-22 halftime knot. Harrison regained command after three panels, 43-38.

After Edison staged a late rally, HC's Kara Dunfee converted four free throws to help ensure the outcome. Dunfee and Jesse Ledger tallied 11 points apiece while Jess Custer distributed six assists.

Katelyn Pollock topped Edison with 15 points. Harrison outboarded the Lady Cats, 46-39.

In Thursday's jayvee game, Harrison was a 43-42 victor.

Monroe Central 62, Beallsville 39

At Woodsfield, Monroe Central improved to 10-6 following a decisive win against rival Beallsville.

The Lady Noles led 16-11 after one period and 28-21 at halftime before outpointing Beallsville 21-6 in the third period to win going away.

Monroe's Chelsey Roberts rifled home a game-leading 26 points and also recorded seven steals. Chelsey Tewanger contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Kelsey Dick brought down 10 rebounds.

Beallsville's lone double digit scorer was Mikaela Headley who tallied 14 points. Big Blue fell to 5-12.

Monroe, a 36-12 victor in Thursday's jayvee tussle, next sees action on the 24th when Magnolia invades.
