Times Leader

HARRISBURG - Albert R. Boscov is a giant in the retail industry, both in the state of Pennsylvania and beyond.

The chairman and CEO of Boscov's Department Stores, Boscov heads one of the last bastions of family-owned business in the retail chain industry.

His father, Soloman Boscov, opened his first department store in Reading, Pa. in 1911.

Albert Boscov took over as chairman in 1968, and today, the company boasts 41 different locations with one soon to open at the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville.

Boscov's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Aug. 4, 2008. A short time later, Boscov, then a former CEO, along with Edwin Laken, purchased the chain out of bankruptcy, returning Boscov's again to a family-owned entity.

Tonight, Boscov will be honored as the first inductee in the PA Retailers' Association (PRA) Retail Hall of Fame.

The PRA is hosting a gala dinner and awards ceremony tonight at the Crowne Plaza in Reading, where the Boscov's story all began.

Governors Tom Corbett, Ed Rendell and Tom Ridge will be the honorary co-chairmen of this event. The guest list will also include other federal, state and local government dignitaries, as well as many of Boscov's family, friends and important business partners, vendors and suppliers.

Ten percent of the net proceeds will go toward Boscov's favorite charitable organization - Our City Reading. The net proceeds from the event will be used to serve and promote the retail industry in Pennsylvania.

Other awards will be given tonight, including: Retailer of the Year, Independent Retailer of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Best Customer Service, Best Visual, Merchandise, Most Community Service, and Best Loss Prevention Partner.
