ST. CLAIRSVILLE Belmont County commissioners have officially designated Fair Housing Month, with a mission to improve the quality of life for all residents and to celebrate Ohio's fair housing law, which is substantially equivalent to the Federal Fair Housing Act.

Nikki Stewart, coordinator of Belmont County Fair Housing, reported on activities planned for the month, including four promotional billboards which have been purchased and placed at Ohio 7 near Bridgeport, Ohio 9 in St. Clairsville in Bill's Towing parking lot, Ohio 7 at Martins Ferry near Hanover Street, and Mall Road in St. Clairsville.

Fair Housing seminars will also be set up, during this month and throughout the year. Promotional posters are being distributed around the county to numerous local businesses in order to help spread the word.

The definition of fair housing is a condition in which individuals of similar income levels in the same housing market have the same range of housing choices available to hem regardless of race, color, gender, national origins, disability, ancestry, familial status, and military status.

Fair Housing treatment applies to persons seeking to lease, rent or buy a home or land. Willful intent to violate the basic principles of fair housing is termed discrimination, and would be a violation of state and federal law.
