Taste Buds: Perkins

Buds find plenty to love at restaurant/bakery

Last week, while Bud Em was enjoying what was left of her 'stay-cation', the Buds decided to meet for lunch so the two could catch up on all the juicy office gossip Em had been missing. (Don't judge us, we're only human.)

When deciding where they should eat, two factors came into play making the often laborious task pleasantly simple. Their names are Mammoth Muffins and money-saving coupons.

Perkins it was, as the hungry Buds were anxious to see if anything new was cookin' since their last visit.

The menu at Perkins is quite extensive, featuring an array of options for every meal of the day - breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Buds were immediately drawn to the breakfast choices. In fact, whenever the choice of breakfast food vs. lunch/dinner food is available, both suffer quite an intense inner battle. Heck, Bud Em would eat pancakes every day for breakfast AND lunch if eating too many of them had no negative side effects.

The yummy breakfast options included pages of eggs, omelets, benedicts, waffles, pancakes and French toast in various combinations and platters. A special seasonal item included the Black 'n Blueberry Multigrain Nut Pancake Platter. Whoa! Three multigrain nut pancakes loaded with blueberries and topped with fresh glazed blackberries and whipped topping. Served with two large eggs, cooked to order, and choice of two bacon strips or two sausage links. Said entree nearly sold both Buds on breakfast, but there was much more to choose from.

The lunch/dinner menu included appetizers, fresh salads, sandwiches, burgers, melts and dinner platters featuring chicken, steak, turkey, pot roast, pork chops and seafood. The Buds noted stand outs among these including the seasonal Roasted Vegetable Penne (a medley of oven-roasted sweet red peppers, zucchini, baby portabella mushrooms and red onions in marinara sauce served over penne pasta), the Wildberry Chicken Salad (chicken, fresh red raspberries and blackberries on garden greens tossed with Wildberry Balsamic Vinaigrette and sprinkled with Asiago cheese and dill-roasted slivered almonds), and the Tangler Burger topped with cheese, bacon and their crispy Onion Tanglers. Decisions, decisions!

As it turned out, both gals decided against breakfast food ... which was probably because each planned on loading up with Mammoth Muffins on the way out the door.

Bud Em settled on a pick two lunch special which rang in just under ten bucks. She chose a turkey cranberry sandwich and a Greek salad. The sandwich featured sliced roasted turkey breast - not lunchmeat - Swiss cheese, a special cranberry mustard and crisp lettuce on toasted wheat bread. Said Bud enjoyed every morsel and especially loved the tangy cranberry mustard. The salad was made of a bed of assorted greens topped with tomato, cucumber, red onions and plenty of crumbled feta. The fresh salad and sandwich proved to be a very tasty and guilt-free lunch, which made her feel not quite so bad about the assortment of muffins she ordered to go - every one of which was DELICIOUS!

Bud Shaunna chose the lemon butter tilapia and shrimp entree that - get this - came with a piece of Perkins' homemade pie, any flavor! Hello, easy decision! The tilapia was topped with mini shrimp and then glazed with a rich lemon butter. Served over rice and with a side of steamed veggies, this was a tasty and satisfying lunch. Bud Shaunna was a bit worried the lemon might be too strong in the lemon butter but as soon as she took the first bite, she knew there was nothing to worry about - a nice balance of flavors.

And of course, let's not forget the slice of pie that Bud Shaunna also got with her meal, which rang in at just under 12 bucks for everything. She barely had to think about her choice of caramel apple pie, as apple pie-type desserts of any kind are Bud Shaunna's absolute favorite. And it didn't disappoint, nor did the assorted muffins and cookies Bud Shaunna took home to share with Bud Hubby.

With tons of choices and a stellar bakery in their arsenal, Perkins remains - with good reason - one of the Buds favorite places to grab some grub!
