EAST RICHLAND - While peer pressure and cliques are not new to teenagers, today's teens face daily decisions and esteem issues brought forth by Facebook, bullies, advertising and the media. Girls in this region will have an opportunity to discuss and address some of those issues at a unique event on Saturday, Aug. 24, "Called Out to Get Real," sponsored by the East Richland Evangelical Friends Church.

The all-day interactive conference is for girls in grades 6 to 12 and women of all ages. It will be facilitated by Get Real in Christ, a non-profit ministry that "encourages, equips and empowers girls to Get Respected, Educated, Able and Loyal in Christ through the support of multigenerational and peer mentors."

Erin Roten, young women's youth director for EREFC and event organizer, says, "So rarely do we get to be with all the girls and talk about the issues they face every day. This gives them a boost and lets them know they're valued for reasons other than their looks. Women face these issues their whole lives, so this is an opportunity for camaraderie among the mentors, too."

Former Victoria's Secret model Kylie Bisutti will talk about her experiences in advertising and modeling and why she chose to leave the field. Brianna Caprice, a 16-year-old singer/ songwriter, and Christian pop artist Shuree will speak and entertain at the conference.

Roten believes that the messages will be important for mentors as well, and that mentors will have opportunities to share their own stories with the girls to let them know they are not alone. She notes that this is not just for EREFC members but this first time event is for the entire community - church groups, mothers and daughters and other girls' clubs - and is for girls and women only. While the conference is not a "church service," guidance and activities will be Christian-based. All topics relevant to teens' lives will be open for discussion.

Check-in and late registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 24 at the East Richland Evangelical Friends Church, 67855 Friends Church Rd. (at National Rd.), just west of St. Clairsville. Tickets are $25 per person. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch is not provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own lunches, eat at the church concession counter or go to local restaurants during the break. Attendees should also bring a journal or notebook.
