Panthers routed by Bulldogs

YORKVILLE - Buckeye Local's new season opened in not quite the fashion the Panther coaching staff had envisioned, instead running into a vastly-improved Pittsburgh Westinghouse team that took a 40-0 win back to the Keystone State Saturday night.

Coach Phil Pest's Panthers were 24-6 winners over the Pittsburgh club last season, also here on the Memorial Stadium turf, and will now move on to week two hosting Union Local on Friday night. Westinghouse is back in the valley next week taking on Wheeling Central Saturday night.

"I'm very disappointed in the way we played tonight," a dejected Pest said following the loss. "I thought our seniors really needed to pick it up tonight. That's our leadership and we count on those guys to pick up the rest of the team.

"By halftime, we had three or four starters out and we had five or six underclassmen starting as it was," he added.

"They are a much improved team," Pest said about the Pittsburgh team. "They are a very physical team. Of course, we helped them a bit with some poor tackling. They were very physical right from start and I think they may have intimidated us.

"If there was a bright spot, I thought that (starting quarterback) Tyler Miller tried very hard out there tonight. He did a nice job, but he took some shots.

"They have to decide what kind of season they want to have. Practice is Monday and we go from there."

Westinghouse was impressive on offense and hard-hitting on defense, but it was coach Monte Robinson's Bulldogs' two first-quarter scores and long touchdown at end the first half that gave the Panthers a long uphill battle.

Senior tailback Raphael Drummond got the Bulldogs on the board with the first of his four touchdowns with 8:34 left in the first quarter on a 15-yard run. He added a second score with 5:25 on the clock from five yards out that pushed the Westinghouse lead to 12-0. Drummond's first score capped off a 51-yard drive and his second was set up by a punt snap that sailed over the head of the Panther kicker and was downed at hosts' 19.

With 2:57 left in the first half, QB Troy Smith connected with Richard Harris on a 16-yard scoring toss. Drummond ran for the two-pointer and a 20-0 Bulldog lead. The score was set up by a Jamier Lane fumble recovery.

With one second left on the first-half clock, Smith hooked up with Desaunte White on a 66-yard scoring play the closed the half with a 26-0 Bulldog lead.

Drummond added two scores in the fourth quarter. He ran three yards for a six-pointer with 9:40 left and added a 15-yard run with 7:15 on the board. A Smith to White two-pointer closed the scoring.

Buckeye threatened to get on the board late in the frame after Dylan Dokes took a Bulldog kickoff and rambled 76 yards to the visitors' 12. The drive was thwarted two plays later by a Panther fumble.
