Food by Jane serving fresh cuisine

MORRISTOWN - Food by Jane is the newest restaurant in Morristown, having opened doors just 12 weeks ago. Owner and manager Jane Marie Miric is originally from Adena, and after graduating from Kent State University with a degree in nursing, she lived in Miami, Florida and Wilmington, North Carolina before moving home in the late 1990s. Miric says opening a restaurant is something she's always wanted to do.

"I love to cook, I love people. I figured it's either do it now or don't do it at all," Miric said. "And I'm having a grand time."

Food by Jane serves breakfast from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, the restaurant is open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., dinner service only. Miric says she is planning on expanding hours soon, but needs more kitchen staff and servers to do so.

Miric takes pride in the quality of food served at her restaurant.

"We don't serve processed foods here. We chop every onion, we dice every tomato...our tomato sauce comes from a tomato, not a jar," she said. Miric says anybody walking through the kitchen would not find pre-packaged food. Food by Jane contains a bar, which also serves quality ingredients. Bloody Mary mixes and sour mixes are homemade, and no high fructose corn syrup is served.

"If you come here to eat, you're going to eat real food. We have a basic menu, every single day. We have features every day, which are what changes."

On Mondays, Food by Jane features Chef's Choice. Tuesday is cuisine by region, and Greek, Cuban, Polish and others have been featured. Wednesday is homemade pasta night, with three or four different sauces and meatballs or chicken parmesan. Thursdays are set for comfort food, like homemade noodles, cabbage, sausage, roast beef sandwiches, salisberry steak, and baked chicken. Fridays feature a Southern theme. The featured dishes are offered in addition to Food by Jane's daily menu.

Saturdays see Food by Jane in a more "intimate setting." Lights are lowered and tablecloths are set, while the menu is limited to dinner dishes.

In addition to expanding hours, Miric plans to open a deli in the restaurant within two weeks. It will operate as a store, selling fresh meats and cheeses as well as deli sandwiches and boxed lunches.

The restaurant's interior was designed by Greg Dutton of Dutton Design + Mgmt, a Pittsburgh company. It features barn-style lighting, wood flooring, and maple school house chairs, with tables topped with fresh flowers. Dutton also designed the 40's era logo.
