Ohio coaching staff named for OVAC Game

MARTINS FERRY — Putting together the rosters for the OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Charity Football Classic can be a tough ordeal.

Usually, that refers to the players. However, Ohio head coach Karl Justus had his challenges in putting together a coaching staff, too.

The former Conotton Valley head coach, who will work at Hocking College for the upcoming season, has representatives from four different high schools, including one from outside of the OVAC.

The staff will come together on July 15 to begin camp for the annual game, which is slated for the Dave Bruney Football Complex on Saturday, July 22.

“It was challenging to put a staff together,” Justus said. “East Liverpool is bringing several of its guys, which made it easier,” Justus said. “I asked some guys and they told me, ‘since you don’t have any of our kids, I don’t want to help you.’ I don’t think that’s the right approach, but that’s what happened.”

Here’s a capsule look at the Ohio coaching staff:

KARL JUSTUS, Conotton Valley — The now former Rockets coach guided the school for one season and they finished with a 3-7 record, which was more wins than it had posted in five years combined.

Along with his year at Conotton, Justus has 34 years of football coaching experience. He was the head coach of Buckeye Local and took them to the playoffs in 1999. He’s also spent 11 years coaching at the collegiate level, including stops at Division I schools Akron and Auburn.

Justus, who is a 1978 graduate of Lancaster High School, owns a degree from Capital University and a master’s from Akron.

Karl and his wife, Colleen, have three children, KB (28), Libby (25) and David (21).

K.B JUSTUS, Lancaster — This Berne Union graduate has spent five years as a football coach, including the last three with Lancaster.

During his stint, Justus has helped guide the Gales to multiple playoff appearances. Prior to joining that staff, he coached at Muskingum and Denison Universities.

Justus owns both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Muskingum.

K.B. and his wife Allie have been married for just over a year.

DOM VINCI, Bridgeport — This current Bulldogs’ assistant has five years of coaching experience.

The Buckeye Local graduate coached at his alma mater prior to joining the Bulldogs’ staff for the 2015 season.

Vinci also has coaching experience in wrestling, baseball and basketball.

Vinci attends Ohio University Eastern.

CHRIS HEATON, Buckeye Local — This former Panthers’ assistant owns a resume with six years of coaching experience.

Heaton, who graduated from Buckeye Local in 2005, owns a bachelor’s degree from Muskingum University. He currently works on the Panthers’ basketball and baseball staffs.

JOSH LUDWIG, East Liverpool — The Potters head coach has been on the staff at his alma mater for seven seasons, including the last three as the head coach. All told, he has 10 years of coaching experience.

Along with coaching football, Ludwig is also a former basketball coach in Midland, Pa.

Prior to entering teaching and coaching, Ludwig was an all-Ohio performer for the Potters and then went on to an illustrious career at Mount Union where he was part of the 2002 national championship team. He finished his degree in 2005.

Josh and his wife Mallory have two children, Teryn and Teagan.

ALVIN THOMPSON, East Liverpool — This Potters assistant has 20 years of coaching experience, all of which have been spent in Columbiana County.

Thompson has spent the last four seasons at East Liverpool. Prior to that, he has experience at Wellsville and Southern. He’s also coached girls basketball in his career.

The Wellsville High and Marietta College graduate shined in football, basketball and track during his prep days.

Alvin and his wife Sabrina have two children Natalie Thompson and Amiyah Powell.

IAN WHITTINGTON, East Liverpool — This Potter assistant just two seasons ago guided the West Virginia squad to a victory over Ohio in the OVAC All-Star Game as the head coach at Oak Glen.

Whittington has eight years of coaching experience. Along with serving as the Golden Bears’ head coach, he’s also a member of the wrestling staff.

Ian and his wife, Amber, have a daughter, Kayleigh.
