Casketmakers win OVBL championship

MAYNARD — History was made Tuesday night at sun-splashed Firemen’s Field when Shadyside captured its first Ohio Valley Baseball League championship since its return to the league several years ago. The top-seeded Casketmakers (20-3) defeated No. 3 Maynard 3-0 in Game 4 of the best-of-5 series for a 3-1 nod and the title.

“What a season!” Shadyside manager/player Logan Hudson said. “What a season! We knew what we were capable of from day one. We just had to play our game. We had a couple of struggles in the playoffs and some off days, but we battled through them.

“Baseball is a beautiful game. We had an awesome season. From 1-15 … how many ever players we had … they all had a part in this.”

Shadyside, which had a 14-game winning streak during the regular season, completed its summer sweep as it also won the regular season.

The Casketmakers scored twice in the first inning and that was all Cody McCormick would need. The righthander scattered five hits — all singles — in throwing the shutout. He struck out five, walked just one and snagged a line drive off the bat of Dylan Busby to end the 1-hour, 46-minute contest.

“Cody McCormick threw an awesome game,” Hudson continued. “He was on his ‘A’ game tonight.”

Cody Hudson and Hunter Westlake started the game with back-to-back singles up the middle off Maynard starter Greyson Loweecy, who would then retire the next two hitters. However, Jared Clovis lined a single to right-center that easily scored Cody Hudson. Westlake would race around when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.

“Huge. Huge,” Logan Hudson said of the early runs. “The last time we played (Game 3) was only the second time we’ve been shutout all year, so it would crucial that we make a statement early. Even if you didn’t get a hit that was huge for everyone’s confidence.”

Nathan Butts’ two-out single in the fourth plated Kraig Kubancik with the third tally. Kubancik led off with a looping single down the rightfield line. He went to second and third on consecutive wild pitches.

Maynard (16-11) threatened in the bottom of the first as Patrick Buchanan singled with one out. He went to second and third on wild pitches with two outs, but wouldn’t go any further as McCormick got an inning-ending groundout. That would be the lone Maynard runner to get past second in the game.

“The offense kind of sputtered there in the beginning and we gave up those runs in the first, which wasn’t good,” Maynard manager Laney Simone Sr. stressed. “It’s hard to come from behind against a good team like Shadyside when you’re not hitting the ball well.”

Chris McIntyre relieved Loweecy with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth. He induced a fielder’s choice grounder to escape without any damage. After hitting the first batter in the fifth, he got a double-play bouncer and retired the final seven batters after that.

“Chris did a great job,” Simone said. “He threw strikes and got outs.”

Clovis, who starred at the plate, on the bases and in the field, was named the championship series MVP. He finished with three hits (all singles), three runs scored, a walk and an RBI, which was the game-winner Tuesday night. He served as the Casketmakers’ leadoff hitter for the first three games before being moved down in the order for Game 4.

“I told him before the game he was there for a reason,” Logan Hudson said when asked by Clovis why the drop in the order. “He’s been in the fifth spot all during the regular season and moved to leadoff for a couple of games in the playoffs when we were short-handed. Look what happened tonight. He came through when we needed him to.”

GAME NOTES

The attendance was estimated at nearly 200 as fans were lined up and down both foul lines. The 50/50 raffle was worth $110.

McCormick was named the Top Pitcher in the championship series. He was also the winner in Game 1.

Despite losing, Maynard turned a trio of double plays Tuesday night.

Maynard has now finished runnerup three straight seasons after claiming back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014.

Four members of the Casketmakers — McCormick, Cody Hudson, Logan Hudson and B.A. Holloway — played for Maynard at one time in their careers, with both Hudsons and Holloway winning at least one championship.
