Area athletes qualify for regional track meet in Division II

BYESVILLE — Several area Division II athletes find themselves on the doorstep of the Ohio State Track and Field Championship.

District tournament action opened at Meadowbrook High School with sights set on the regional meet, which will be held May 24 and 26 at Muskingum University in New Concord.

The St. Clairsville boys find themselves in second place after four scored events.

The Red Devils will be represented in the regional by junior jumper Justin Heatherington, who advanced in the long jump as the fourth qualifier with a mark of 21-feet.

In the pole vault, junior Luke Watt qualified by virtue of finishing third at 11-feet.

The Red Devils also advanced in the 4×8 as the team of Isaac Davis, Kevin Klinkoski, Noah Palmer and Ethan Banks finished fourth in 9:04.38.

Martins Ferry’s Jarrett Bolinger advanced in the pole vault, soaring over 11-feet to advance as the runnerup.

The Purple Riders’ 4×8 team of Marcus Clark, Ozy Gil, Justin Geery and C.J. Anderson posted an 8:54.96 to finish second.

Union Local’s Zach Bateman was fourth in the pole vault thanks to an 11-foot clearance.

Bellaire’s 4×8 team qualified as the bronze medalists. The squad of Zach Lowe, Griffen Heatherington, Jacob Defibaugh and Isiah Wilhelm teamed for a 8:59.94.

Steubenville’s Jorian Jones qualified in the long jump, finishing second with a mark of 21-2 1/2.

On the girls’ side, Indian Creek finds itself in second place after the opening night with 19 points.

The Redskins picked up a quick 10 from their talented 4×8 team of Spencer Neville, Aiamyia Dudley, Sloane Lewis and Kelsey Lewis. That squad passed the baton to a 9:48.30 to win by 38 seconds.

Freshman Rileigh Gualtiere tied for third in the high jump at 4-10, punching a ticket to next week’s meet.

Union Local also produced a district champion. Senior Allison Loase won the pole vault by clearing 10-feet.

The Jets’ 4×8 team of Casey Kildow, Briana Bumgardner, Sutherlynd Butler and Hannah Kemp posted a 10:26.85 to finish second.

St. Clairsville’s Dakota Stoner advanced in the pole vault at 8-6 and senior Aziaha Robinson was fourth in the shot put at 34-4 3/4

Barnesville qualified in a pair of field events. Freshman Rylee Stephens was third in the high jump at 4-10.

Senior Samantha Drake was second in the shot put with a mark of 35-3.
