Tiger 4 Man group hosting 5K on Saturday to remember a friend

SHADYSIDE — The Tiger 4 Man has evolved from just a fun day for a group of buddies who love to compete into an impressive fundraiser for a variety of different people and groups.

The organizers of the event are now expanding, too.

Luke Burkhardt — a yearly entrant in the Tiger 4 Man — is organizing a 5K run and walk on Sept. 1, which will begin and end at the Buzz Inn in Shadyside to raise funds to begin a scholarship in memory of Josh Carpenter, a member of Shadyside Class of 2002, who died in March after a battle with cancer.

“The 4-Man guys talked about trying to do something different and more than just our one event during the summer,” Burkhardt said. “Essentially, a few of my buddies and I are into running and the growing trend of physical fitness and thought a 5K race would be cool. It’s community based and it’s fun. Most importantly, it’s a chance to do something in memory of our friend.”

Carpenter was diagnosed with Multiple Myleoma about a year ago and during the treatment process it was realized that he had plasma cell leukemia, too.

“I am excited to be a part of this because of the chance to honor Josh,” Burkhardt said. “I was close with him. We’re not doing this for anything or do we expect anything. I just want this to be a time when people can come and honor Josh with positive, happy emotions.”

The aforementioned scholarship is expected to become an annual to a Shadyside High School graduating senior. The original plan is to aim the scholarship toward someone who enjoys art and industrial arts.

“Josh was an artistic person, who loved working with his hands,” Burkhardt recalled.

The entry fee for the race is $25 and the price will not change even on race day. Each entrant will receive a t-shirt. The top three finishers in both male and female — walk and run — will receive a medal. The age group winners will receive gift cards.

“Instead of medals for the groups, we thought the gift cards would be something different and a chance to benefit the people and the businesses,” Burkhardt, who works as a nurse practioner at Wheeling Hospital, said.

Any veterans, current military members or first responders are welcome to take part in the race free of charge. College or high school students are welcome for $20.

The entire race will be staged on the western side of the Shadyside.

“I enjoy races and I think this kind of event, for this cause, might be a good way to get some people involved, who may not normally do these,” Burkhardt said.

The site for the race was chosen because Carpenter operated the business for his father, who bought it 10 years ago.

The race will be contested in the morning, but Burkhardt said competitors and onlookers are welcome to hang out throughout the day. Ohio State’s game with Oregon State will be shown and there are multiple bands scheduled to play as well as raffles.

“It’s going to be a fun day,” Burkhardt said.

Additional sponsorships are still being accepted as are race entries. For more information, contact Burkhardt at 740-579-6419.
