Ferry girls win OVAC Class 4A title

CAMBRIDGE — The OVAC Cal Pokas Cross Country Championship was contested on a new course Saturday morning at warm and humid Cambridge High School.

However, the end results were very similar to what we’ve seen in the past when the meet was staged just a few miles away at Meadowbrook.

University’s girls had all seven of its runners earn all-OVAC, which includes a top 30 overall finish en route to an impressive total of 29 points.

Martins Ferry, which has been impressive all season, captured the 4A title for the eighth time in school history and first since 2015 with 155 points, which was good enough for third overall.

Caldwell, which has been a running factory in the Ohio Valley for many years, added another banner to its collection by capturing the 1A/2A title with 180 points.

Linsly finished fifth overall and is bringing back the first girls’ CC trophy in school history. The Cadets tallied 183 points to dethrone Bellaire, which had won four consecutive titles in Class 3A.

CLASS 4A

Martins Ferry had yet another impressive showing. After taking last weekend off, Coach Chrissy Lewis’ Riders returned to the course fresh. And it showed.

Ferry placed three runners on the all-conference team and all five of their scorers inside the top 80 overall.

“I thought the kids performed well again,” Lewis said. “My top, core group really ran well. We were all eager to get back on the course.”

Leading the Riders was senior Natalie Forsyth, who placed 13th overall in 21:28. Olivia Walton was 20th in 22:08, junior Chloe Hill was 24th in 22:19.

Rounding out the scoring for the Riders were freshman Hannah Hupp and junior Hope Lewis.

“I was worried the girls wouldn’t win, so this is much more of a shock to me,” Lewis said. “I knew I needed my fifth girl, who is my daughter, to run well. She was running well and passing some people, so I was hopeful, but you never know with this big of a field.”

St. Clairsville had two runners — Allyson Evonek and Maggie Marody — earn a spot on the all-OVAC team thanks to placing 17th and 21st, respectively.

Harrison Central’s Jasmine Arnold was the 4A class champion. She finished sixth overall in 20:25 and her sister, Destiny, was 14th.

CLASS 3A

Linsly made school history and head coach Carrie Ochap had done a lot of homework coming into the meet and thought it “was going to be super close” for her team.

It actually turned out to be a rather decisive victory as runner-up Bellaire finished more than 100 points back.

“We had ran against 90 percent of our division and really only a few teams that we weren’t sure about,” Ochap said. “The girls have worked hard. They came out ready to run.”

Being the first team in the school history to win a girls’ cross title is “everything” according to the head coach.

“The group of girls we have is absolutely incredible,” Ochap said. “To say that I have 13 varsity runners and 8 middle school runners is amazing to me.”

The Cadets were fueled by sophomore Molly Herron, who was an all-OVAC runner with a 27th place finish in a time of 22:33.

Freshman Grace Landini was 30th overall and turned in a 22:43.

Other Cadets to figure in the team scoring were senior Mackenzie Courtney, freshman Haley Heitz and junior Maddie Campsey.

The 3A champion was Buckeye Trail’s Kathryn Williams. The talented freshman ran an impressive 20:07. She was fourth overall.

The balance of the 3A runners to earn all-OVAC accolades include Union Local’s Hannah Kemp, who was 12th overall in 21:17; Bellaire junior Katrina Davis, who was 25th in 22:20.

CLASS 1A/2A

Caldwell won the small-division team title with 180 points and they were 142 points better than runner-up River.

The Pilots were led by the individual champion in the class. Junior Olivia Beard was eighth overall in 20:55. She was the lone runner in the division to garner all conference.

CLASS 5A

University’s run was impressive as it produced the top two overall finishers in junior Zoe Shetty, who ran 19:12 and sophomore Caroline Kirby who crossed in 19:25.

All told, 15 of the all-conference slots went to the big-school athletes.

John Marshall had a pair of runners recognized. Sophomore Zara Zervos was seventh in 20:43 and freshman Ally Hicks was 26th in 22:30.

Steubenville, which is in just its second season of cross country, was led by freshman Anastasia Crisante, who was 16th.
