Elite wrestling club coming to Wheeling

WHEELING — One of the top amateur wrestling clubs in the nation is setting up shop in the Ohio Valley. The Young Guns will be opening a training location, starting on Sunday, Jan. 6, on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University. Practice sessions will be conducted every Sunday morning from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m.

Young Guns co-founder and coach, Jody Strittmatter, an NCAA Division II National Champion at University Pitt-Johnstown and a Division I NCAA runnerup at the University of Iowa and his team of highly qualified coaches are looking forward to moving into their new location. Included on Coach Strittmatter’s coaching staff is Brian Kapusta, who was a 3-time national champion at North Dakota State University. He has been instrumental in the development of many of the Young Guns wrestlers, and will be spending a lot of time teaching and instructing in the Wheeling room as well.

“The Ohio Valley has a huge pool of talented wrestlers and having an elite club like Young Guns in our backyard is just going to take these kids to the next level,” Wheeling Jesuit University head coach Danny Irwin admitted. “I look forward to seeing how far these committed wrestlers can go with Coach Strittmatter starting a location here in Wheeling.”

Over the years, Young Guns has produced numerous NCAA national champions at the Division I and Division II levels such as Jason Nolf (Penn State), Vincenzo Joseph (Penn State), Nico Megaludis (Penn State) and Spencer Lee (Iowa) and countless All-Americans and state champions.

Young Guns is designed to get every wrestler to the next level, regardless if they are high school, middle school or youth wrestlers.

“Knowing what I know about Young Guns and Coach Stritmatter, the Ohio Valley could not be getting a person more dedicated to the wrestlers he is training,” former Wheeling park head wrestling coach Ed “Buzz” Evans said. “If you want to be trained by arguably the best technician in the country, then get to Young Guns and get there as much as you can.”

Cost for membership is $100 for one wrestler, $150 for two wrestlers in family and $190 for three wrestlers in family, as well as a $30 initial insurance payment. Drop in rate is $20 per workout.

Any wrestler looking to begin working out with Young Guns at the Wheeling location just needs to show up on any scheduled workout days.
