Tigers’ depth slows Linsly

SHADYSIDE — Shadyside’s depth wore visiting Linsly out Thursday night in girls’ high school basketball action.

The Tigers’ bench came up clutch in the first half as it netted 21 of the hosts’ 34 first-half points. The starters took control in the second half as the Orange-and-Black (7-1) cruised to a 60-34 runaway victory over the Cadets (3-7).

Brooke Selmon nailed back-to-back three-pointers from the right wing that ignited a 9-1 run to end the first quarter with the Tigers leading 12-7. She added six more points in the second quarter as the hosts built a 34-14 advantage.

“She shot the ball really well this summer and has been in practice, but I think she has gotten off to a slow start,” Shadyside head coach Serge Gentile said. “The last couple of games, however, she’s come in and hit some big shots for us. She got comfortable and she’s streaky when she does.”

Her 12 points led the way as Julie Hendershot added four, Kamdyn Elerick three and Paige Gorby a bucket.

“Any time you have depth is a good thing,” Gentile noted. “It’s a long season at 22, 23 or 24 games. It’s tough to play well individually for that long, as well as a team. It’s crucial that we have some good depth, and I have confidence in anyone that steps on the floor for us.”

The Shadyside starters got hot in the third quarter and the rout was on. Syd Destifanes scored all seven of her markers in the third panel, while Baylee Wach added six of her eight.

Linsly was its own worst enemy in all phases of the game. It shot 24 percent from the floor (12-50), which included an ice-cold zero-for-18 from beyond the bonus arc; was a miserable 10 of 26 (38%) from the free-throw line; and turned the ball over 20 times, with most being of the unforced variety.

“Basketball is a simple game,” Linsly head coach Rebecca Upton said. “You’ve got to get yourself to the free throw line and you have to make free throws. You also can’t throw the ball to the other team.”

Jenna Mayeres hauled down 10 rebounds to take game honors as both teams finished with 35 boards each. Gorby charted seven, while Selmon and Julie Hendershot evenly divided 10. Charlie Allison had nine for Linsly.

Shadyside took care of the ball with just seven turnovers before recording five in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers have a week off before Beallsville visits.
