Shadyside hands Andes 300th coaching win

SHADYSIDE — It was a time for celebration in the Tigers’ Den Tuesday night.

Shadyside staged Senior Night, honoring a quartet of players before dismantling outmanned rival Bellaire by a 59-29 count. The triumph took on added significance as it was the 300th for Tigers’ head coach Ed Andes at his alma mater.

The impressive victory also helped the Orange & Black maintain fourth position in the OVAC 2A playoff chase. The cutoff is just six days away. The Tigers are now 11-7.

“Three hundred wins means I coached a lot of good players, helped by good assistants who stuck around awhile and supported by a quality administration,” Andes, now in his 22nd year at the helm, offered. “We are playing real well as a team now. Things are falling in place.

“We only had nine days of practice before our first game due to our football success. Plus, Kelly (Hendershot) missed our first four games due to a football injury,” he added. “So now we have been together for a while and it shows. We are finding the open man and playing better defensively.”

Andes started all four of his seniors — Quinn Berletch, Anthony Coggins, Frank Ripoly and Collin Holmes — along with Hendershot. That group helped stake the hosts to a 16-4 lead after the first quarter. Bellaire never seriously challenged the balance of the night.

Shadyside owned a 30-15 halftime advantage and stretched the upperhand to 52-21 after three periods.

The winners featured nice offensive balance with three players in double digits. Hendershot led the way with 18 counters, including a breakaway dunk in the third quarter.

Coggins and Holmes enjoyed their Senior Night by tallying 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Tigers placed seven players in the scoring column.

Bellaire dropped to 2-16 on the campaign. Coach Ben Doyle’s charges return to action Saturday at St. Clairsville taking on Buckeye Local in a Buckeye 8 placement game.

Sophomore Marshall Fish came off the bench to pace the Bellaire scoring with nine points, all coming on treys. Junior Trenton Wilson was next with seven markers.

“We were down 15 points early and 14 of those came on turnovers. We are not a team to play from behind,” Doyle said. “We have a hard time scoring. We missed a lot of open shots.

“We have some young kids who are passionate about getting better. So hopefully they keep working,” he added. “Shadyside is a real nice ballclub and they are playing at a high level right now.”

Shadyside took excellent care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers. Bellaire, meanwhile, was guilty of 20 miscues.

The Tigers trek it to Cameron Friday night.
