Area matmen punch district tickets

BARNESVILLE — The Big Green Machine continued its magical season Saturday as Barnesville captured its own Division III sectional wrestling tournament. The Shamrocks piled up 198.5 points and had nine district qualifiers. Martins Ferry, with four qualifiers, was a distant second with 128.

Among Barnesville’s qualifiers were sectional titlists’ Griffen Stephen (106), Brylan Clouse (182) and Zach Meade (220). Finishing second were Carter Wells (113), while Jacob Boulet (138), Dylan Glotfelty (145), Cameron Woods (152) and Owen Oliver (160) were all third. A.J. Francis (120) was fourth.

Buckeye Local placed fourth with 125 points, which was 1.5 behind West Wuskingum.

Head coach Willie Saxton will have seven individuals competing at Saturday’s district tournament which will be held in Connorville on Friday and Saturday.

Leading the way for the Panthers are sectional champs Brian Palmer Jr. (126) and Charlie Smith (170). Zac Cesario (220) was a runnerup, while Trevor Herbert (106), Travis Light (126) and Shayne Christian (182) were all third. Taking fourth was Jordyn Spencer (113).

Bellaire, Martins Ferry and Union Local have four district qualifiers.

The Big Reds had a pair of champions in Joseph Bonfini (120) and Cody Albaugh (160). Nick Beckett (152) and Vincent Patrone (182) both finished fourth.

Representing the Purple Riders at the district will be sectional champ Drake Dobson (195) and runnersup Kameron Hughes (170), Richard McFarland (182) and Donte Lewis (285).

The Jets qualifiers are second-place finisher Brady Crum (145) and third-placer Ryley Crall (132). Colin Greenwood (106) and Kohl Clark (170) finished fourth.

AT SANDY VALLEY, Bridgeport finished fifth with 112 points but advanced five individuals to Saturday’s district at Buckeye Local.

Two Bulldogs — Mason Kuneff (160) and Tino Kusic (170) — won championships, while Zach Kuneff (285) was third. D’Zayveon Richmond (138) and Devin Danhart (220) both finished fourth.

Division II

AT STEUBENVILLE, St. Clairsville placed third behind OVAC powers Beaver Local and Steubenville. The Red Devils amassed 172 points, which was one-half better than West Holmes. The Beavers finished with 277.5. Big Red had 236.

St. Clairsville will have 10 representatives at the District Tournament at Heath High School.

Finishing second were Koen Kish (120) and Derek Witsberger (195).

Third-place finishers included Josh DeNoble (113), Caden Stout (132), Austin DaRe (138), Reese Skaggs (170), James Dobbs (182) and Justice McCamick (220). Taking fourth were Jaiden Springer (160) and Trey Delguzzo (285).

AT CLAYMONT, Harrison Central qualified three individuals to the district.

Senior Cody Gamble (285) was a champion, while Justin Sampson (106) and Blayne Erwin (182) were fourth.
