Harrison topples Buckeye in baseball

CADIZ — Ohio State recruit Andrew Clelland showed why the Buckeyes were interested as he recorded eight strikeouts in Harrison Central’s 6-5 win over Buckeye Local Saturday in high school baseball action at Mazeroski Field inside Sally Buffalo Park.

Skylar Mazeroski singled and doubled and Trevor Carman added two singles for the Huskies. Clelland had an run-scoring double.

For the Panthers, Frederick Hetler II supplied a double and single. Daniel Kelly and Matthew Scott singled in runs.

MORRISTOWN — The Jets debuted with a sweep of the visiting Zeps.

Luke Merritt supplied two singles and a double while Carter Loase had three singles in the opener. Kolby Smolira struck out seven in four innings.

In Game 2, Hunter McCort laced three singles and a double while bringing in four runs for UL (2-0). He also earned the win on the mound. Smolira added a single, double and RBI. Dakota Hess also had a double and brought in four runs.

SOFTBALL

Bellaire 11, Caldwell 6

ST. JOE — After dropping the first game of a doubleheader Saturday to Caldwell, the Big Reds (1-1) earned a split with a 11-6 win in Game 2 on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Katrina Davis knocked in two runs for the winners with a single and double. Mia Gavarkavich added an RBI single.

Andrea Booker earned her first varsity win by striking out 10 and walking three. She scattered eight hits.

The Big Reds host Martins Ferry (0-1) today.

Harrison Central 9, Ridgewood 3

RIDGEWOOD — Brittany Positano supplied two singles and a triple while Jenna Young had two singles and three RBI as the Huskies debuted with a road win over the Generals.

Sarah Touville suppled two singles for the winners. Joclyn Peshek singled in a run.

Kaylee Elliott went the distance with five strikeouts and a trio of base-on-balls. She allowed five hits.

Brooke 9, Martins Ferry 4

WELLSBURG — Rachel Kazmirski fired 16 strikeouts while Landyn Haynes had two doubles and two RBI as the Bruins (3-2) topped the debuting Purple Riders.

For Martins Ferry, Lauren McFarland belted a two-run homer while Alea Funkhouser tallied two singles and brought home a run.

MORRISTOWN — Sophia Recrosio totaled four singles, a double, triple and five RBI as the Cadets split with the debuting Jets. Sarah Heller had two doubles and two RBI while Karena Recrosio had three singles.

UL (1-1) bounced back in Game 2 as it scored nine runs in the first inning. Kaden Mercer had two singles, a triple and two runs batted in, while Taylor Powell and Emilee Robb each had two singles and two RBI. Bailey Rinkes also belted a single and double.

Rinkes also fanned six in a route-going performance.
