SHADYSIDE — Temperatures are climbing and times are dropping.

Such was the case Saturday at sun-drenched Fleming Field for the 48th Shadyside Relays.

With the OVAC Cal Giffin Track Championship slated to begin qualifying rounds two weeks from Monday, area teams got another big tuneup as 19 boys and girls’ teams took part in the annual event with a few familiar faces rising to the top of the team standings.

BOYS

St. Clairsville has flexed its muscles early and often during the April portion of the track and field season.

Coach Tony Ciroli’s team amassed 101 points, which was fueled by six victories and a lot of depth.

Senior Justin Heatherington got things going for the Red Devils with a pair of wins in the field. He won the high jump at 6-2 a short time after claiming the long jump with an impressive 21-1 showing.

On the track, senior David Mellema continues to improve and reign supreme as the area’s top hurdler. He swept the timber events, winning the highs in 15.46 and the intermediates in 41.39.

To close out the morning session on the trac, the team of Austn DaRe, Joe Burdym Mellma and Collin Oberdick skimmed 40 hurdles in 63.12 to win the shuttles.

The Red Devils put the finishing touches on their impressive performance when the squad of Mellema, Ian Dagan, Xavier Williams and Declan Dombrowski ran a 3:34.05 to win the 4×4.

The runner-up Tigers, who enjoyed one of their strongest showings in their own meet for many years, were led by talented distance ace Chase Stewart, who ran all three long distance races and scored 28 points.

He won the 1600 in 4:37.98, the 800 in 2:05.44 and finished second in the 3200 with a 10:28.54.

In the field, Shadyside received a quick 18 points in the pole vault. Senior Dale Hawthorne claimed the top spot with a 12-6, edging out his sophomore teammate, Brenden Schrader by six inches.

River’s Cooper Brown continued to dominate the area 400 meter dash scene. He sprinted around the oval in 51.05 to win by more than a second.

Weir High senior speedster treated the crowd to a pair of impressive showings in the short sprints. He edged out Wellsville speedster Justin Wright in the 100 with a blazing 10.51 clocking, while Wright checked in at 10.77.

The Red Riders’ speed collection joined forces to win the 4×1 and 4×2 relays. The quartet of Andrew LeMasters, Quincy Dameron, Jake McCoy and Sebastian Spencer posted a 44.41 in the 400 relay. In the 800, Gage Reitter stepped in for LeMasters and the team posted a 1:31.69.

Bellaire’s two victories came in the throwing circles. Senior Cole LaRoche — the defending Division II state champion, remained undefeated in the shot put. He launched the iron ball to a mark of 57-5 to win by 10 feet.

Freshman Colt Sechrest won the discus throw. He unleashed the platter to a mark of 141-3 for the title.

GIRLS

Linsly, which has its eyes set on a repeat in the OVAC championship meet in two weeks, was impressive in rolling to the team title.

The Cadet were fueled by five victories.

Junior speedster Maddie Campsey capped a big week in the 400 meter dash by winning the title in 61.59.

Senior Kenzie Courtney and sophomore Molly Herron all but sealed the deal for the Cadets with a respective one-two finish in the 800. The winner crossed in 2:33.95, which was 55 hundredths better than her teammate.

The Cadets got going in the relays, too. The foursome of Brinley Steen, Faith Paull, Campsey and Sydney Glessner posted a 1:51.75 for the gold.

Linsly put the exclamation point on its victory when the quartet of Paull, Herron, Curtney and Campsey won the 4×4 by more than 13 seconds with a 4:19.79.

That same quartet actually ignited the relay championships when it won the 4×8 in 10:59-flat.

Magnolia finished a distant second to the Cadets. The Blue Eagles finished with 68 points.

St. Clairsville, which finished third in the team scoring, posted two victories and accumulated 67 points over the course of the 18 events.

Senior Alyssa Otto prevailed in a nip-and-tuck 200 meter dash by a hundredth of a second with a 27.13.

The Red Devils’ 4×1 team of Lydia Wees, Sydney Porter, Otto and Emily Baire posted a 51.38 to breeze to victory in the lap relay.

River junior Livi Beard won the 1600 meter title, edging out a balanced field with a solid 5:42.04. Her time was just over a second better than Linsly’s Herron and two seconds better than Union Local’s Hannah Kemp.

Beard claimed the 3200 meter run, too. She circled the oval eight times en route to a 12:09.59 to win by 14 ticks.

Bellaire picked up a win in the high jump as senior Michaela Flaherty was one of three competitors to soar over 4-10, but she got the victory on number of misses.

Weir High got into the winning act in the second event of the afternoon session when sophomore Blaire McUmar dashed down the track in 13.07 to win the 100.

Edison’ Faith Hoobler continued her brilliant season in the throwing circle. She won the discus with a mark of 121-11 and finished second in the shot.
