OHIO VALLEY UNSUNG HEROES: Goode always there for Magnolia athletics

NEW MARTINSVILLE — If you ever attend a Magnolia High School sporting event, chances are you’ll see RJ Goode there.

Wearing glasses and a hat, Goode has done nothing but good things for the Blue Eagles the past decade-plus — both as a student and alumnus.

He might not be the school’s biggest booster, but he’s right up there.

“My passion for sports is really what I love to do,” he said. “It’s giving something back to the school that’s done so much for me.”

Goode has assisted in a variety of roles, but his main duty now is keeping stats for the football program. It’s an arduous position, he said, but one that provides great joy.

“In late July or early August of 2011 I was walking home and my phone rings,” Good recalled. “It was Bruce Crawford (sports editor at The Wetzel Chronicle). He said he had a proposition for me. He told me that Coach (Mark) Batton wanted to know if I’d be willing to keep football stats for him.”

Of course, Goode, being the go-getter that he is, said yes.

“To tell you the truth, I had no idea what I was getting myself into,” he laughed. “It’s a fun job, but it’s hard, especially being on the sideline.”

But there’s no place he’d rather be than at Alumni Field at Bill Stewart Memorial Stadium on a Friday or Saturday, or even Thursday night. In fact, with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Blue Eagles, serving as statistician is right up Goode’s alley. He’s worked for three coaches — Batton, Josh Sims and ‘Doc’ Chapman.

“I’ve seen a lot of great games at Magnolia,” he said. “And I’ve seen a lot of great players. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Although he’s not actively helping a spring sport at Magnolia this season, he noted he’s always at the ready, if needed.

“I did some of the book this past season for the girls’ (basketball) team, and I’m always ready to help Dave (boys basketball coach Tallman), if he needs it.”

Goode was member of the band during his tenure at Magnolia, where he graduated in 2006. Still, he was always close to the sports teams, either through the coaches or Crawford.

“I love it and I’ve made so many good friends,” he said.

Although he’s long since graduated, Goode said he considers the kids which is works with sort of like family.

“I had a younger cousin that graduated two years ago and I had a younger cousin that graduated three years ago,” he said. “So, I know a lot of the kids and I want to see them succeed.

“Basically, I do the things I do for the kids. I don’t do it for the acknowledgment.”

Goode would, basically, give his right arm for Magnolia and its sports programs. His devotion is deep-rooted in family and that’s what keeps him coming back year after year.

“I’ve made a lot of great friends,” he said. “I do it all for the kids. I have a great relationship with the guys and build bonds that last a lifetime.”
